Get Access Strength in the Face of Adversity: Surviving Illness Gracefully Essay Sample Strength, serenity, courage, and humor; these are all descriptions of the traits my elderly neighbor possessed throughout her whole life, including through her diagnosis of cancer.

She was always ready to sacrifice her time and energy to talk to anyone having problems of their own and was reluctant to speak about any problems she was having herself. Finding out she had cancer was something that was only revealed to me in a joke she made.

I cannot imagine taking these serious subjects and smiling and joking about them. She lived her life to the fullest and, I think in some small way her cancer made her cherish what she had even more.

She told me more and more of her life stories, hopes and dreams she had as a child, and her philosophy of life after her diagnosis. I feel I owe it to her to showcase her lovely life and timeless triumph. When I first met her, she was always eager to initiate conversation.

I was young, busy, and being still was just not a part of my usual repertoire. She would invite me in for coffee, tea, cookies, and extended all of the Grandmotherly pleasantries every time I saw her.

She was persistent and resolute. I have since found that when she found someone she liked, she was relentless until she could solidify the friendship. I decided then, rather than to ignore her, I actually appreciated her persistence.

I believe that this persistence and perseverance is what helped her battle the disease she developed later. By that time, I was a lifetime friend, that is to say, I was her friend from then on to the end of her life.

I remember the summers full of drinking iced tea on her back porch.

We learned so much about how things change, but how they still remain the same. I would inquire how people could find love through writing letters, she would inquire as to how sending text messages or e-mails could be construed as romantic.

We agreed to disagree. But, we totally agreed that love and friendship were both priceless. I think we may have said once that friends and loved ones add years to your life, because of all the laughs and happiness they bring us. I hope that this is true.

It is the summer when I resigned to her pursuit of my friendship that I remember most. It could have been for all we knew. Time stood as still as the air and the sweltering heat. We melted away the hours talking as the ice cream melted down our chins. But, it seemed my new friend began to grow wearier earlier and earlier each evening.

I would wait for nightfall to run and catch fireflies to bring back to her, but she would retire to bed before this. I asked if she was okay and she would grin and say that she was just ready for a good dream.

With all our talks of the past, she wanted to re-visit them there, as well, she said. So, I would run and catch the fireflies alone, thinking of simpler times.

It was a similar night in late summer and I began to get ready to go home, I was too old for fireflies and bedtime stories. She sensed my boredom and said to me that living in the past should only be temporary. Just like a walk in the park, these walks down memory lane should be short and sweet.

It was time to think of the future.Like you, always there. You said I was not strong. So I created strength to fight against these natural feelings which keep me tied to you. I drew a line in the sand so I would not step towards your door again. I have boundaries, strength and pride. What I do not have is you.
